Dr. Anthony Alario (DVM, DACVO) is originally from New Jersey and completed his undergraduate degree at Rutgers University. Anthony obtained his veterinary degree from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and remained at Tufts to complete a one year internship followed by a three year residency in comparative ophthalmology. During his eight years at Tufts University, Anthony published many peer-reviewed articles in the field of veterinary ophthalmology. He has also had the privilege of speaking on the topic of veterinary ophthalmology as an invited speaker to veterinarians around the country.
Much of Anthony’s research is in the field of non-invasive imaging techniques of the eye; however, he has a strong interest in glaucoma and diseases of the lens as well. What Anthony enjoys most about ophthalmology is the variety of species he has the opportunity to work with and the many unique ocular adaptations each animal has developed.
Anthony lives with his better half, also a veterinarian, and their three boys. They share their home with many animal friends including three cats, two dogs, two horses, chickens, ducks, turkeys and honeybees. The whole family loves the outdoors and loves living in rural New Hampshire.

Dr. Wendy Townsend, a primary researcher into PU, will be performing ultrasounds of Golden Retriever eyes. This non-invasive procedure is free of charge, is not painful or uncomfortable and has the potential to provide critical information for continuing research into this disease. Dr. Townsend will examine any Golden Retriever – healthy eyes or otherwise – 6 years and older. Goldens without pedigrees or those from a rescue situation are more than welcome to become a part of this research project. Dependent on the interest in this year’s clinic, the age requirement is subject to change.
Dr. Townsend is strongly encouraging Golden Retrievers 12 years and older and those previously seen at PU clinics to participate in this year’s clinic. The clinic is limited to 125 dogs. Appointments will be arranged once judging schedules are announced.

CHIC BANK: The Golden Retriever Foundation is once again combining its ongoing DNA blood collection project. There is no charge for the blood draws or shipping. GRF also absorbs the OFA CHIC fee for Goldens.
For donating blood to the GRF projects with OFA and Broad Institute, please download and print the DNA Repository form located on the OFA website at: https://ofa.org/applications/ Since these forms require extensive information, it would be best to do that now. This will save you time on clinic day.

The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL), in collaboration with Dr. Niels C. Pedersen and staff, has developed a panel of short tandem repeat (STR) markers that will determine genetic diversity across the genome and in the Dog Leukocyte Antigen (DLA) class I and II regions. This test panel may be useful to breeders who wish to track and increase genetic diversity of their breed as a long-term goal.
